This study explores professional musicians’ experiences with precarious employment and unpaid contracts. Dr. Connelly and her four partner organizations, Canada’s Music Incubator, Music Canada Live, the Music unit of the City of Toronto’s Film and Entertainment Industries section, and the School of Creative Arts at Humber College, hope to learn about the effects of being asked to work for free (unpaid contracts) on professional musicians. They will also use the results of this study to develop materials about which gigs musicians should seek and avoid and about strategies musicians can use to increase their employability.
